ARROW’s Andrew Kreisberg Discusses Competition From AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. And Other Comic Book Shows

With a very solid first season and a near-flawless second season, many haven’t hesitated to call Arrow the best live action comic book series ever. However, the series did face some competition this year with Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which airs on ABC. While the Avengers spin-off has more weekly viewers than Arrow‘s usual, fans commonly consider the CW series to be of higher quality. Speaking with TV Line, Arrow executive producer Andrew Kreisberg comments on this apparent competition. “We don’t really feel like we’re in competition with anybody else. We’re only trying to outdo ourselves as we move forward.”

The next couple years are going to be big for comic book television shows, both DC and Marvel. Shows based on The Flash, Gotham, Constantine and Hourman are in development, as well as four Marvel series for Netflix leading into a Defenders miniseries. Kreisberg talked about these future shows, saying that we’re currently in a “golden age” of superhero adaptations. “I think all of us here — not just as writers but as viewers — are thrilled that we’re in what feels like a golden age of comic book adaptations in both film and television. We’re excited to be part of this real shift in the TV landscape that includes S.H.I.E.L.D. and hopefully for next season Gotham and Constantine, and even the Daredevil show, which I’m really excited about.” He finishes by saying, “We really feel like a rising tide lifts all ships, so the more comic book adaptations the better!”

Arrow is currently on its mid-season hiatus, and will return to The CW on January 15th.
