BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN: Amy Adams Comments On Backlash Against Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman Casting

When Gal Gadot was cast as Wonder Woman in Batman vs. Superman earlier this month, the announcement received plenty of backlash from fans – not unlike the reactions to Ben Affleck’s casting as the Dark Knight. The most common complaint claimed that the Fast & Furious 6 actress was too thin to play the character. This is a rather ludicrous statement, as anyone who is cast in a major action role has to get into shape. Director Zack Snyder is also known for getting his actors into proper shape; 300 and Man of Steel are proof of that.

Meanwhile, we have first comments from one of Gadot’s Batman vs. Superman co-stars regarding the backlash. Speaking with MTV, Amy Adams – who plays Lois Lane in the series – is asked about these criticisms, as well as whether or not an actor’s body shape is really important for a key comic book movie role. Adams admits that she’s unfamiliar with Gadot’s body shape, and says that she relates to the backlash. “I don’t buy into that. Not that I [don’t] believe that it’s happening, but I’m certainly not a classically drawn woman as they exist in comic books, so I had to embrace that I just had a baby, I still hadn’t gotten my waist back. Lois is not about proportions, Lois is about her intellect and her savvy reporting skills and her empathy for Clark, and so I just didn’t think about it.” Meanwhile, Adams is confident that Gadot will be physically suited for Wonder Woman. “She is going to be yoked, man. He [Zack Snyder] is going to make her a beast.”

Batman vs. Superman (not the final title) is scheduled to hit theaters July 17th, 2015. The follow-up to Man of Steel, the next installment in the DC Cinematic Universe stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Diane Lane, and Laurence Fishburne, with Jason Momoa in talks to join. Zack Snyder directs from a script by David S. Goyer and Chris Terrio.
