BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN: Michael Wilkinson On His Costume Designs For Batman, Superman And Wonder Woman

We’ve heard from costume designer Michael Wilkinson concerning his work on Batman vs. Superman before, but in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, he goes into further detail on his approach. While he remains mum on details, he does say that the new costumes for Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman will be relevant and ideal for the DC Cinematic Universe. “I’m not really at liberty to talk about the details of everything, but suffice to say we really respect the histories of all of these characters. We’re all very reverent about the iconic graphic nature of these characters and their costumes. We see ourselves as part of the natural lineage of how these characters are being portrayed through out the ages and our goal is to create something relevant and exciting for today’s audiences and something that works for this thrilling cinematic universe that our director Zack Snyder is creating.” He then discusses researching the source material to design the best costumes possible for the movie. “You really dive into the source material. We’re looking at all of the different ways these characters have been portrayed over the ages. We’re looking hard into Zack’s script and working out what makes sense as far as telling the story — who these people really are and what they represent, how to make sense of them in today’s world. It’s an interesting, multilayered design challenge.”

There has been much talk about when we will finally get out first look at these new costumes, particularly Ben Affleck’s Batsuit. When asked this, Wilkinson said that he didn’t know, especially since the movie’s release date has been pushed back to May 2016. “Ooh! Our film just got pushed. It’s now not being released until June or July 2016. I don’t know. We’re been having some interesting camera tests and photo shoots so far. I’m not exactly sure what dates we’re going to get them released, but I’m sure Warner Bros. has it all worked out.” It was recently reported that a first look at Affleck’s Batman suit will be released in February or early March, when production is expected to be underway. We should hear something official soon.
Batman vs. Superman (not the final title) is scheduled to hit theaters May 6th, 2016. The follow-up to Man of Steel, the next installment in the DC Cinematic Universe stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Diane Lane, and Laurence Fishburne. Zack Snyder directs from a script by David S. Goyer and Chris Terrio.
