Josh Brolin Reflects On JONAH HEX And What Went Wrong With It

2010’s Jonah Hex was anything but a success. Not even leading man Josh Brolin and secondary villain Michael Fassbender could save the DC Comics adaptation, which was dead on arrival with critics and audiences. Now, speaking with Total Film, Brolin looks back on what went wrong with the project. He agrees that the movie was as bad as the critical reception suggests, and implies that newcomer director Jimmy Hayward was at least partly responsible. “I think it deserved that bashing for reasons that those critics will never know. We were almost ready to drop [the film] when this kid [Hayward] came up. He was an interesting young guy full of energy and he was obsessed with Jonah Hex. I thought, ‘This is either a really bad decision or a brilliant decision.'” And I think we know which one it was. “Really bad,” says Brolin. He then concludes with, “If I’m ever really rich, I’ll do that movie again. Seriously.”
Despite this failure, it doesn’t look like Brolin is finished with the comic book movie genre yet. After a strong performance in 2012’s Men in Black 3, he will be seen later this year in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Additionally, he was a leading contender for the role of Batman in 2015’s Batman vs. Superman before Ben Affleck was cast. Hopefully, he will get another shot at headlining his own comic book franchise in the future.
