Possible BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN And JUSTICE LEAGUE Tidbits: Lex Luthor, WB’s Plan To Upstage Marvel, Superman’s New Hairdo And More

While we have to wait another year for Batman vs. Superman to be released, we have more potential news surrounding the highly anticipated movie. Comic Book Movie has received a slew of details regarding not only the Man of Steel sequel, but some tidbits regarding Warner Bros.’ other plans for the DC Cinematic Universe. First, the site’s source says that Joaquin Phoenix is “very close” to signing on for the role of the main villain, aka Lex Luthor. The Her actor has been linked to the part for a month now. CBM then reveals that Henry Cavill’s Superman will be getting a new hairstyle. It’s said that the new ‘do will be similar to the Man of Steel’s look in Kingdom Come, minus the grey hair. The original look also has the iconic “S” curl, which was noticeably missing in Man of Steel.
The other day, rumors claimed that Ben Affleck has suffered an injury, resulting in Batman vs. Superman‘s production to be delayed. Injuries ranging from the ribs to the leg have been reported. The latter can be ruled out, as Affleck was seen recently at the SAG Awards with no indications of a limp. Well, CBM’s source says that the Batman actor has sustained a not-so-severe musculature injury. He is expected to be back to full health in April, when production is now rumored to kick off. Right now, though, he’s unable to perform certain stunts. These action sequences will require a stunt double. Finally, CBM says that Affleck’s injury has not influenced WB’s decision to delay the movie, but the reports might be a smokescreen for other behind-the-scenes issues.
One of these issues influencing the delay is said to be concerning the budget. With Wonder Woman set to appear in the film, WB is debating whether or not to include her home island, Themiscyra. It could just be referenced, but if a full-on appearance is shown, it will need “massive VFX”. CBM knows of other issues surrounding the delay, but they are not detailed.
Last week, it was that Batman vs. Superman will film back-to-back with the long awaited Justice League movie. “General Napier”, CBM’s source, says that decision hasn’t been made yet, but is being considered. Another source tells the site that Justice League is moving forward, with plans to release it a year after Batman vs. Superman. That would put it in theaters in 2017, which was reported to be the tentative plan last summer. Napier also states that the rumor of a cliffhanger ending for BvS is very true.
In fact, it looks like cliffhanger endings will become the norm for DC movies moving forward. They will apparently be one of the elements used in WB’s plan to compete with Marvel. While that studio is well known for including post and mid credits at the end of its movies, WB wants to go a different path. Instead, WB/DC will end each of their movies with a cliffhanger, setting up the next installment of the cinematic universe. Additionally, WB intends to make short films for lesser known characters. These shorts would screen at the end of each feature film.
Finally, we have an update on Batman vs. Superman‘s marketing campaign. CBM states that it will still begin this year. In addition to the much anticipated photo releases, a viral site will go online, with a “choose your side” angle. We can also expect casting news for Joaquin Phoenix to be announced soon, as well as rumored contenders Jason Momoa and Josh Holloway.
While this could all end up being true, none of these details have been confirmed officially. Until then, take this news with a pinch of salt. Stay tuned for more news as we have it.
Batman vs. Superman (not the final title) is scheduled to hit theaters May 6th, 2016. The follow-up to Man of Steel, the next installment in the DC Cinematic Universe stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Diane Lane, and Laurence Fishburne.
