Zack Snyder Says THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS Influences The “History” Of BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN

When the Batman vs. Superman announcement was made at Comic-Con last year, director Zack Snyder said that the iconic graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns would “inform” the film. This and the inclusion of an older Batman made many to believe that the Man of Steel sequel would be at least a loose adaptation of the Frank Miller piece. However, in an interview with French magazine Popcorn (thanks to Comic Book Therapy for the transcription), Snyder reaffirmed that the movie is not a direct adaptation, but slightly elaborates on how influential the novel will be. “But the comic book will influence the history of Batman Vs. Superman, on which the writer David S. Goyer and myself will work.”

Snyder then comments on Ben Affleck’s take on Batman. His quotes here are nearly exactly the same as his statement on the original Batfleck casting announcement, contrasting him to Henry Cavill’s Superman and the portrayal of Bruce Wayne and Batman in the movie. “Ben brings an interesting counterweight to the performance of Henry in the role of Superman. He has the experience necessary to paint the picture of an older and more advised man than Clark Kent, who bears the scars of a seasoned vigilante while retaining the charm that Bruce Wayne deploys when present in the world.” We should be hearing more from Snyder soon, as the promotional campaign for 300: Rise of an Empire is expected to officially kick off within the next few weeks.
Batman vs. Superman (not the final title) is scheduled to hit theaters May 6th, 2016. The follow-up to Man of Steel, the next installment in the DC Cinematic Universe stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, and Laurence Fishburne. Zack Snyder directs from a script by David S. Goyer and Chris Terrio.
