Darren Aronofsky Looks Back On Being In Contention To Direct MAN OF STEEL

Before Zack Snyder was hired to direct Warner Bros.’ Superman reboot Man of Steel, acclaimed filmmaker Darren Aronofsky was reportedly in contention for the gig. Now, speaking with MTV News, the Noah director confirmed that he would have “absolutely” helmed Man of Steel under the right circumstances. “Superman’s one of the holy grails. It’s Superman. It’s the best superhero. Batman is great, of course, but it’s Superman. He’s the same level. That possibility was great.”

Aronofsky then affirmed that he had a “few conversations” with producer Christopher Nolan about directing the film, before Zack Snyder landed the job. However, Aronofsky has no hard feelings toward the 300 helmer. “I thought Zack was a great choice, and I loved his ‘Watchmen’ movie. I thought it was great. I thought that as a fan of the comic, you couldn’t hope for a better interpretation. I liked the orthodoxy of it.” He finishes with his thoughts on Man of Steel, praising its approach to adapt Superman within a modern context. “It was interesting to add the pathos that they put into the character. It’s a hard one to do. You look at what Christopher Reeve did, and it was perfect, because it captured that ‘good old boy’ thing. But to try and redo that again and bring that for a modern audience is tough in a post-‘Batman’ and ‘Wolverine’ world. It’s hard to do that.”

While Aronofsky has yet to direct a comic book movie, he came close a couple of times. He was attached to an adaptation of Batman: Year One several years ago, but was canned in favor of Batman Begins. He then was signed on to helm The Wolverine before dropping out. His latest film, the controversial Noah, was based on his graphic novel which “adapted” the classic Bible story. While Aronofsky would have been an interesting choice to tackle Man of Steel, Zack Snyder still did a remarkable job. Which comic book character do you want to see brought to life by Aronofsky?
