David S. Goyer Talks CONSTANTINE Pilot, Keeping It Close To The Comics, Characters And More

David S. Goyer is currently Warner Bros.’ go-to writer for the studio’s DC adaptations. Known for penning Man of Steel and co-writing Batman Begins, he also wrote the initial draft for Batman vs. Superman and is contracted to script Justice League. In the meantime, Goyer conceived the story for NBC’s Constantine pilot with Daniel Cerone, who wrote the script.
Speaking with I Am Rogue, Goyer discusses the small screen adaptation of John Constantine. He reveals when production begins, and reaffirms that this take on the character will be a blonde Brit. “We start shooting next week. Shooting the pilot. We only have four series regulars but we’ve cast them all now. I’m proud to say that Constantine is actually being played by a British guy, Matt Ryan, and he is going to have blond hair.” He goes on to further detail how close this Constantine will be to the comics’, but adds that his smoking habit isn’t a sure thing. “That’s a tricky one on network TV. We’re negotiating right now. He will have his signature trench coat and skinny tie. I would say that the show clings more closely to the source material then the film did. Even though the film was interesting.”

Goyer then confirms that Constantine will be closer to Alan Moore’s creation, and that we should expect plenty of familiar faces if the series moves forward. “And quite a few other characters from the comic books and possibly from the DC universe should we move forward will be showing up. I think we would try to bring in some of the other occult figures.” And will the series be heavy on visual effects? “Yes, very. And Neil Marshall who directed The Descent, Black Sails, and Game of Thrones is doing the pilot. He’s pretty good with scares.”

Finally, Goyer discusses the other series regulars, teasing their characters in Constantine as well as the announcement of another recurring role. “Harold Perrineau. He’s amazing. He plays an angel but not the kind of angel from Touched by an Angel. He’s fantastic. Charles Halford who plays Reggie Ledoux on True Detective. He plays Chas. I don’t know if you know that character from the comic books. He’s sort of Constantine’s strong man/friend. Lucy Griffiths who is … I don’t want to say too much about her. She’ s an amalgam of characters. Hopefully, touch wood, They’ll be another recurring character announced. Pretty cool actor who fans will know the character he plays from the comic books as well.”

Constantine is targeting a slot in NBC’s Fall 2014 schedule. Stay tuned for more details as we have it.
