THE FLASH News Bits: Teases For First Episode, Rick Cosnett Talks Eddie Thawne, Mark Waid Praises Pilot

As we get closer to the fall premiere of The CW’s next DC television series, The Flash, we have some new tidbits for the highly anticipated pilot. According to TV Guide‘s Natalie Abrams, those who expected Reverse-Flash to be behind Nora Allen’s death in the Arrow spin-off will not be disappointed. This idea, ripped straight from the comics, was further cemented by the recently released trailer, which teases Barry’s greatest nemesis. Additionally, Abrams teases the reveal of other villainous forces at the end of the pilot. “Ever since “The Scientist,” where Barry talked about a blur, not his father, being the real culprit behind his mother’s death, savvy comic book fans have suspected that the Reverse Flash would play a role in the spin-off. Those fans won’t be disappointed, but the final moments of the series premiere will also hint at other nefarious forces at work in Central City. Oh, and the very first crossover will not disappoint.” Said crossover will be a cameo by Stephen Amell’s Arrow, who offers Barry advice on how to approach his new powers.

Speaking of Reverse-Flash, Rick Cosnett will play Detective Eddie Thawne in a Flash series regular role. Of course, the character’s name is very similar to Eobard Thawne, Reverse-Flash’s alter ego. So, it’s easy to assume that Cosnett’s character will become Professor Zoom at some point. In the meantime, the Vampire Diaries actor spoke with myFanbase about the series. After the site mentions that Cosnett will play a “supervillain” on The Flash, he responds, “We’re so excited about it. Unfortunately you’re going to have to watch to find out exactly what happens as Eddie’s lips are sealed right now.” He then discusses playing a complex character like Thawne. “I do love the messed up depths of Dr Wes and I think it’s something that fascinates and scares me about the human condition. I always want to know why people behave in extremes and how they got to that point. Eddie is a wonderfully complicated character to play.” After citing the cast and crew as the most exciting part of the series, Cosnett concludes, “I am so invigorated and feel lucky to be working with people who are so passionate, down to earth and talented. It’s gonna be a real ensemble effort and I feel like the chemistry is gonna set it all on fire.”

Finally, someone who knows The Flash very well has praised the latest television incarnation. Comic book writer Mark Waid, who wrote the Scarlet Speedster in the past, has seen the CW pilot, and offers his very positive take on it via Twitter. “Not only is the #Flash pilot EXCELLENT, but (for this) the dead-mom retcon doesn’t grate. Great show, and Tom Cavanagh is astounding.” He then says to Flash executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, “Seriously, you two. #Flash is really, really good. You made it work. Thanks for remembering he ENJOYS HIS WORK.” While he is currently working at Marvel, Waid is also known for his acclaimed work at DC, including JLA: Tower of Babel and Kingdom Come.
