Guillermo Del Toro Updates On DARK UNIVERSE And Whether Or Not It Will Connect To Other DC Properties

It has been a while since we’ve heard anything regarding Guillermo del Toro’s Justice League Dark adaptation, which is tentatively titled Dark Universe. Due to the slow development and the director’s commitments to other projects, fans have had low expectations for the film actually coming together. Now, however, del Toro reaffirms that he is still working on the project.

In an interview with SuperHeroHype, the Pacific Rim director was asked if his movie will be linked to Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Sandman adaptation or any of DC’s more mainstream films, such as Justice League. While del Toro was open to the possibility of the latter a while back, he says that that won’t be decided unless Dark Universe is a success. “I’m still working on it. Sandman doesn’t figure in the Dark Universe. We have Deadman, we have [Etrigan] the Demon, we have Swamp Thing, we have Zatana, we have Constantine, but DC and Warners have been very clear that they are trying to keep those properties separate so when the time comes they can unite them, once they know they’re quantifiable. Batman, Superman, Green Lantern… everyone eventually will come together. Right now, they’re allowing us independence.” So, it sounds like the possibility is there, but won’t be pursued right away.

Del Toro is also asked if the film will be linked to NBC’s Constantine series. Again, he expressed interest in connecting the two before, but he now says that his movie will not depend on the show for continuity. “No, I had that conversation when the Constantine show was pitched. I said, ‘Do I have to have continuity with that?’ and they said, ‘No, feel free to continue the way you’re going.” For more from del Toro, in which he updates on Pacific Rim 2 and other future projects, click the link above.
