About Those DC Movie Website Domains…

Yesterday, after I did some digging, a slew of website domains for several DC Comics film adaptations registered by Warner Bros. went viral. This is understandable, given the expectation of at least some DC movies being announced soon. However, most of these domains are old, and without any further updates by WB, they will expire within the next couple years.

Firstly, both ShazamMovie.com and AquamanMovie.com were originally registered back in 2000. While movies for both characters are in the works, these domains have existed years before the films entered development. So, even though both movies are expected to be released soon, these domains aren’t proof of that. Both domains are expected to expire later this year, unless they are updated.

Likewise, in 1999, Warner Bros registered the WonderWomanTheMovie.com domain. Several different iterations of a Wonder Woman movie had been in development for the past decade or more, so it’s unsurprising that the studio would lock down a website domain in the event that a film entered production. This domain will expire in August 2016, unless (again) WB updates it to last a couple more years.

Additionally, Warner Bros. registered SandmanMovie.com back in 2001, and it is set to expire next January. In the late 1990s, a film adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Vertigo classic was in the works, even though the iteration(s) planned obviously didn’t happen. So, again, it would make sense for the studio to purchase a website domain in case Sandman entered production. Last year, it was confirmed that Joseph Gordon-Levitt was involved with a new adaptation of the comic, but once more, this domain isn’t proof that the movie will happen in the near future.

The only domain that has been registered recently is JusticeLeagueFilm.com. This one was registered in November 2013, a few months before Warner Bros. confirmed that the superhero ensemble will follow Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It is currently on track to expire near the end of 2016. So, of the domains listed here, this would be the most “news-worthy,” even though we already knew Justice League was happening.

Ultimately, while more details surrounding DC’s big screen future is expected to be announced sooner than later, many fans mistakenly assumed that these domains were all registered recently and took it as a sign of news coming. Hopefully, this post will keep others from being misinformed by misleading news articles. Still, stay tuned for more DC Entertainment updates as we have them.
