Breaking: AQUAMAN Movie In Development At Warner Bros.; Two Screenwriters Hired To Pen Separate Scripts

Last week, Warner Bros. announced release dates for nine DC films, spanning from 2016 to 2020. Of course, there has been much speculation over what exactly these movies are – Shazam and Justice League are almost definitely going to be two of them. And now, it looks like we can throw an Aquaman movie into the mix.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriters Will Beall (Gangster Squad) and Kurt Johnstad (300: Rise of an Empire) are set to pen two separate scripts for a solo film starring the King of Atlantis, which will be among the movies that build the DC Cinematic Universe. This film is being developed on “dual tracks”; that is, the studio is writing two separate versions of the same project and will go with the better of the two. Jason Momoa is attached to play Aquaman in both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. While the character has been the butt of superhero jokes for decades, recent iterations have made Aquaman a force to be reckoned with. And casting an actor like Momoa will surely help audiences take him more seriously.

As for the two writers, both have experience with major Warner Bros. productions. Beall wrote the disappointing Gangster Squad and even penned a draft of the Justice League movie, but that version of the DC ensemble was scrapped before Man of Steel officially created a cinematic universe. Johnstad, meanwhile, wrote 300: Rise of an Empire for producer Zack Snyder, who of course is directing Batman v Superman and Justice League after helming Man of Steel. It will be interesting to see whose script comes on top. Stay tuned for more news as we have it.
