DC TV Bits: Greg Berlanti Confirms SUPERGIRL, Andrew Kreisberg On FLASH Easter Egg, GOTHAM Named TCA’s Most Promising New Series

Last week, it was reported that Warner Bros. and DC are developing a Supergirl television series, with Arrow and The Flash‘s Greg Berlanti set to executive produce. The project, which likely will not be titled Supergirl, is prepping to be pitched to various networks in the coming weeks. In the meantime, Berlanti has confirmed to Comic Book Resources that he is indeed working on the series, but he refused to talk more about it until it finds a network. “We’re just starting to work on it. We haven’t gone to the networks yet, so. I’ll be happy, very excited to talk about it once we know where its home will be and that kind of stuff, but not at this moment.” The show will be written by executive producer Ali Adler, with DC Entertainment’s Geoff Johns also expected to be involved. While previous reports suggested that The CW has turned down the latest live action outing of Superman’s cousin, Berlanti’s comments here suggest that the home of Arrow and The Flash could still pick up this series. We should find out more soon.

This section contains some SPOILERS from the pilot for The Flash. If you have not yet seen it and do not wish for it to be spoiled, then stop reading now.

We recently heard from the producers of The Flash regarding a scrapped LuthorCorp Easter egg, and now, Andrew Kreisberg weighs in on one that did make the cut. Speaking with Collider, the executive producer discusses perhaps the most exciting reference in the Arrow spin-off’s pilot. At the very end, a newspaper from ten years into the future contains the headline “Wayne Tech/Queen Inc. Merge Complete.” This, of course, confirms the existence of Bruce Wayne in The CW’s DC Universe. While it’s unlikely that this will lead to something bigger, Kreisberg discusses the inclusion of this and other Easter Eggs. “There’s one thing they let us put in there. In the newspaper, it’s so small, but Geoff Johns said it was okay ‘cause the paper is from 10 years in the future, it says, “Queen Consolidated/Wayne Enterprises Merger Completed.” We figured that was the kind of thing where, once people saw it, they would freeze-frame it to look at the rest. As with both Arrow and The Flash, there are all these Easter eggs. Especially in upcoming episodes when The Flash is running through the streets, a lot of the times, the entire environment is digital. It’s not just The Flash, it’s the buildings and everything. It’s just all one big CG image, and the animators have had fun with that. There have been billboards that say, “Palmer Technologies,” which is Brandon Routh’s character on Arrow. And there’s Big Belly Burger, which is now a national chain that existed in Arrow.”

Kreisberg continues, “Part of the fun of reading a comic book is when you’re reading a Batman comic, and then you turn the page and Superman shows up. Both of these shows exist in the same world and they connect to each other. We had a lot of success on Arrow, referencing what was going to be happening in The Flash pilot. This year, simultaneously, they’re going back and forth with each other.” He also rehashes past comments regarding the removal of the LuthorCorp reference due to the likelihood of Warner Bros. disapproving. Finally, we have more fuel to add to the high anticipation for Gotham. The Batman prequel series, whose streaming rights were recently picked up by Netflix in an unprecedented deal, has been voted the most promising new television show of the Fall 2014 season by the Television Critics Association (TCA). It was followed by The CW’s Jane the Virgin and Showtime’s The Affair. Gotham also won the most anticipated drama series TCA poll. While many have yet to be sold on the idea of a Batman-centric television show without Batman, there is clearly much interest in the series. Gotham premieres on Fox on September 22nd.
