Warner Bros. Digital Announces Live Action STATIC SHOCK Series

Today, Warner Bros. unveiled plans for a new digital content unit, called Blue Ribbon Content. This unit will produce new digital short-form series, both animated and live action, and it is helmed by WB Animation and Digital Series president Sam Register. Recently, WB Digital and Machinima announced plans to produce Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles, a new miniseries to tie into the animated DC movie of the same name, for an early 2015 bow. Now, Blue Ribbon Content has unveiled more projects, including the live action debut of a fan-favorite DC character.

Plans are underway for the series Static Shock, based on the popular hero of the same name. Django Unchained producer Reginald Hudlin is on board this production, which stars young hero Virgil Hawkins. A Milestone character who transferred over into the mainstream DC Universe, Static is perhaps best known for headlining the hit Static Shock animated series, which took place in the same universe as other shows such as Justice League Unlimited. Denys Cowan, a founder of Milestone Media who later produced the animated series, is involved with this live action iteration. More details can be found in the official summary below. More on Blue Ribbon Content’s slate can be found here.

Writer/producer/director Reginald Hudlin (Best Picture Oscar nominee for producing Django Unchained) leads the creative team behind a live-action adaptation of Static Shock, featuring the African-American super hero Static, aka Virgil Ovid Hawkins. Static Shock is based on the Static comic co-created by the late Dwayne McDuffie with co-writer Robert L. Washington III and artist John Paul Leon, which was originally published by the DC Comics imprint Milestone Comics and, later, by DC Comics. Milestone Media co-founder/comic book artist/TV producer Denys Cowan (the original Static Shock animated series) is collaborating with Hudlin on the new Static Shock.
