Breaking: Warner Bros. Courting Jared Leto To Play The Joker In SUICIDE SQUAD

Casting is well underway on Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad, which brings together a number of DC supervillains. The movie is said to be targeting a number of A-list actors, with Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Tom Hardy in talks to star. Additionally, Jesse Eisenberg is expected to reprise his role as Lex Luthor from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. But this latest report is arguably the most exciting yet.

According to The Wrap, WB is courting Jared Leto – who won an Oscar earlier this year for his supporting role in Dallas Buyers Club – to play a character who looks to be none other than The Joker. This is apparently the role offered to Ryan Gosling, who turned it down due to his reluctance to sign a multi-picture contract. While Joker wasn’t in Justin Marks’ script, David Ayer is writing his own draft, which is said to include the Clown Prince of Crime.

Of course, The Joker has had a long history in live action, played by actors such as Cesar Romero and Jack Nicholson. His last movie appearance was in The Dark Knight, where he was played by Heath Ledger in a shocking and jaw-dropping performance. The actor went on to posthumously win the Best Supporting Oscar for his role, the only comic book movie performance to achieve such a goal. Naturally, it would be a hard act to follow with future incarnations of Joker.

However, including the character in the DC Cinematic Universe sooner or later is a given, and Suicide Squad is an intriguing choice to introduce him. That movie is rumored to include Harley Quinn, a character with close ties to Joker. Actresses Margot Robbie and Cara Delevingne have been linked to the role. Hopefully, we’ll hear an official cast announcement sooner than later. Suicide Squad is set to hit theaters August 5th, 2016.
