Creator John Ostrander Talks SUICIDE SQUAD Movie

When Warner Brothers announced the cast for Suicide Squad on December 2nd
speculation and excitement ran rampant.  While we were all debating the casting choice,
ComicBookResources.com went straight to the source.  They spoke with the creator of the modern Squad, John Ostrander.

Ostrander relaunched the Suicide Squad in 1987 and his run
lasted over sixty issues until it canceled in 1992.  His run was beloved by readers both for the
characters and for its take on the politics of the time; Ostrander took on
subjects like the Cold War and Terrorism and often had appearance by real-world
political figures like President Ronald Reagan.

Ostrander was both surprised and pleased that Suicide Squad was not only a part of
the DC Cinematic Slate but the direct follow-up to Batman v Superman.  The confidence
DC/WB has shown in the property with that position pleased him. 

Unsurprisingly, one of the first things CBR asked Ostrander
about was the biggest name in the cast, Will Smith.  Ostrander was pleased with the choice for
Deadshot saying: “I see it. I
definitely see it.”  He
went on to say; “The thing you have
to consider is that movies are different and separate entities from comics.
They have different needs, and they have to find ways to get a lot of people
into seats. To the general public, Deadshot as a character is not well known,
so they wouldn’t really notice any difference. Of course, the people doing the
movies want to have the biggest star that they can, because that will help draw
people into the movie. Understanding all of that, I have no problem with the
casting. “

He also thinks that depending on how the character is
written he’s intrigued by what Smith will bring to the character.

CBR then asked about Tom Hardy playing Rick Flag, Ostrander
noted that the casting of Hardy and Smith and so many strong actors to the film
shows that Warner Brothers “is very
serious about this movie. They are serious about the concept. “

When CBR asked about the task presented to writer, Justin
Marks and Director, David Ayers Ostrander says he’s heard they are sticking
with his original premise for the book: The Secret Society of Super-Villains
meets The Dirty Dozen.  

They also discussed the casting rumors surrounding the
character of Amanda Waller.  Ostrander
was very excited by the three rumored front-runners: Oprah Winfrey, Viola Davis
and Octavia Spencer.  He told them
that the actresses were at the top of his list. 
“I was just talking to my fiancée
Mary Mitchell the other day, just before this was announced, and those were the
three names that came to me off the top of my head. Oprah was actually at the
top of my list! She showed in The Color
Purple that she’s a really good actor, and she’s got the attitude for
Waller. And they’re all of the same general build, which I made for Waller. I
like that, as well.“

Finally, they asked if he’d be interested to take part in
the production.  He joked that he wanted “like a Stan Lee cameo”
before he said he’d be happy to discuss anything any of the cast or crew would
like to.  He finished by saying he’d the
“First in Line.”

It’s good to know where the line starts.
