Viola Davis Close To Signing Multi-Picture Deal To Play Amanda Waller In The DC Cinematic Universe

After about a month of being rumored for the role alongside Oprah Winfrey and Octavia Spencer, Oscar nominated actress Viola Davis confirmed that she was reworking her schedule to play Amanda Waller in the Suicide Squad film. Warner Bros.’ DC supervillain movie has already assembled an amazing lineup of actors, and Davis would add even more talent to its cast. And now, a new report reaffirms that she is close to signing the dotted line, but don’t expect Waller to appear in more films than Suicide Squad.

According to The Wrap, Davis is nearing a deal to play Waller in multiple films set in the DC Cinematic Universe, beginning with a “key” supporting role in Suicide Squad. In that film, Waller will be the one who assembles and oversees Task Force X. While Davis’ schedule is still being reworked – she is committed to the TV series How to Get Away with Murder, which could complicate the process – The Wrap’s sources say that her deal is expected to be closed within the next few weeks. The fact that Davis is enthusiastic about this role also helps. Additionally, Will Smith, who plays Deadshot in Suicide Squad, has personally urged Warner Bros. to cast Davis as Waller.

Then there’s the question of which DC movies will feature Waller. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has finished production, so unless reshoots take place, don’t expect Davis to make a cameo. Could she appear in one or both of the two Justice League films? Cyborg? The Flash? We’ll just have to wait and see. Assuming Davis’ deal closes, expect an official announcement to be made within the next month or two. Stay tuned for more as we have it.

Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theaters August 5th, 2016. The third installment in the DC Cinematic Universe stars Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne and Jared Leto. David Ayer writes and directs.
