DC TV News Bits: New VIXEN Details, More SUPERGIRL Casting, Jada Pinkett Smith Not Returning for GOTHAM Season 2

Arrow‘s Marc Guggenheim recently appeared at Long Beach Comics Expo (via Comic Book Resources) alongside wife and Agent Carter executive producer Tara Butters, and the two spoke about their respective comic book shows. Guggenheim offered an update on the animated spin-off Vixen, which will premiere on The CW Seed later this year. He revealed that Stephen Amell and Grant Gustin will reprise their role as Arrow and The Flash, respectively, in the digital series. Additionally, Vixen‘s tone will be closer to The Flash‘s than Arrow‘s.

Of course, that’s not the only Flash/Arrow spin-off in the works, as a “superhero team-up” starring Brandon Routh, Caity Lotz and more was recently announced. The potential series is currently untitled, but Guggenheim says that it will not be called The Brave and The Bold, which has been a frequently suggested name by fans. Meanwhile, with the Supergirl pilot now filming, we have some more casting news. According to ComicBook.com, Iron Man and Star Trek actor Faran Tahir is set to play “The Commander” in the pilot. The character is said to be a guest star role that could be upgraded to recurring if Supergirl is ordered to series. The Commander is described as “an alien military expert leading the forces aligned against Supergirl.” No other details are known about this character right now. Supergirl is expected to premiere on CBS this fall.

Finally, we have some news on Gotham. Fox recently renewed the Batman prequel series for a second season, but Fish Mooney actress Jada Pinkett Smith signed a one-season deal. While it is possible that she could renew her contract, a new interview suggests that she could very well be done with the series by the end of season one.

Appearing on ABC’s LIVE with Kelly and Micheal (via ComicBook.com), Smith admits that she doesn’t think she will return as Mooney for season two of Gotham“I don’t think so. I signed for a year and the year’s up. BUT! There are some great things coming ahead on Gotham, believe me.” There has been speculation that Mooney will be killed off at the end of the season, and while that is far from confirmed, the unlikelihood of Smith reprising the role does add a little substantiation to it. Stay tuned for more as we have it.

UPDATE:  Smith has now told Extra that she is definitely leaving Gotham following the conclusion of this season. “We’re done. I did my year and I had a good time. The show is going to have an awesome finale!” However, Smith is happy with the work she did on the season, saying it was a dream to play an original character in the Batman origin story.
