Joel Kinnaman Confirms Involvement as Rick Flagg in SUICIDE SQUAD Movie

After Tom Hardy dropped out of playing Rick Flagg in Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. began searching for an actor to replace him. Jake Gyllenhaal turned down the role, while Joel Edgerton, Karl Urban and Jon Bernthal were all rumored to be in the running. Eventually, Joel Kinnaman was reported to be set to play Flagg.

And now, the RoboCop actor has confirmed his role in the DC Comics adaptation, which begins production next month. Speaking with Allocine while promoting WB’s new film, Run All Night, Kinnaman confirmed that he will indeed play Rick Flagg in Suicide Squad. The actor simply says, “All I can say is that I will be in the movie, and it’s going to be amazing.”

Kinnaman talks in much more detail in a separate interview with Collider. He refuses to confirm whether or not he will keep his facial hair to play Flagg, and he says he is currently preparing for Suicide Squad on the weekends in Toronto while filming another movie, The Revenant, in Ontario for the rest of the week.

Kinnaman goes on to praise writer-director David Ayer and the film’s story. “The story’s dope and David is just, he’s cool. You know, I think you’re always afraid when you go into like a big superhero movie that it’s gonna be kinda just action and you’re not gonna be able to just really go to the bottom of the characters, but I think he’s gonna be able to do both, really give it both depth and scale. Yeah, all the conversations that we’ve had so far have been like, ‘Wow. Okay, we’re really going there.’ So that’s fun.” Finally, Kinnaman affirms that he has a “long” schedule coming up.

Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theaters August 5th, 2016. The third installment in the DC Cinematic Universe stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, Viola Davis and Jared Leto. David Ayer writes and directs.
