Bruce Timm Shares His Thoughts on Harley Quinn’s Appearance in SUICIDE SQUAD Movie

The other day, we received our first look at the Suicide Squad movie lineup, including Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. The first big screen appearance of the character looks to be heavily inspired by the New 52 version, which is different from the one created by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini for Batman: The Animated Series. Naturally, this first-look photo has generated much discussion online. Some of it was positive, some was negative. However, one of Quinn’s co-creators has offered his seal of approval for this look.

While at the Machinima Newfronts to promote Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles, Timm spoke with Polygon about Suicide Squad and creating a character who would go on to star in a live action theatrical film. “It’s interesting. It’s weird. Myself — being somebody who’s taken characters that pre-exist and putting my own spin on them in my own little universe — I’m very aware of how when a character that I necessarily created shows up in other media that they have to adapt it and do different things with it than I would do. So I’m very open to it to see what they’re going to do. I’m actually really excited.”

Timm then went on to share his initial thoughts on Harley Quinn’s costume in the movie, saying that it surpassed his expectations. “I just today, just before the show started, saw the first image of Harley Quinn from the Suicide Squad movie, and I thought ‘Woah. She looks actually pretty cute!’ I was actually kind of worried I thought ‘Oh, she’s going to look really, really bizarre and skanky’ but nah, she’s not too bad. So I’m often mistaken.” Do you think Suicide Squad should have gone with more of a Timmverse-inspired Harley, or do you prefer the New 52-influenced direction it is going in?

Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theaters August 5th, 2016. The third installment in the DC Cinematic Universe stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Karen Fukuhara, Jim Parrack, Adam Beach, Ike Barinholtz, Common, Scott Eastwood, Viola Davis and Jared Leto. David Ayer writes and directs.
