CBS Officially Orders SUPERGIRL to Series

It’s official: Kara Zor-El will soon be returning to the small screen in her own live action series.

CBS has confirmed that Supergirl has been ordered to series, marking the latest milestone in DC Entertainment’s television success. The show stars Melissa Benoist as Kara, a native of Krypton who follows her cousin Superman in publicly embracing her superpowers. The series also stars Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, David Harewood as Hank Henshaw and Chyler Leigh as Alexandra Danvers. The show marks Supergirl’s second live action appearance on television, following her role in Smallville.

Now that Supergirl has been ordered to series, the next thing CBS must do is decide on which timeslot in the schedule the show must go in. Sources for The Hollywood Reporter say that CBS could air Supergirl at 8 PM EST on Sundays, which is considered a family-friendly slot.

Another possibility, as previously reported, is to air it in the summer. This is a unique option, as few comic book adaptations air on television in the summer. With CBS’ Upfronts panel to be held on May 13th, we will likely know then where Supergirl fits into the network’s schedule.

Supergirl is the latest DC Comics adaptation to go to series. It will join returning shows Arrow, The Flash and Gotham this year, while The CW’s untitled Arrow/Flash spin-off is considered a lock for a series order. However, it is unknown if NBC will renew Constantine for a second season, while Vertigo adaptation Lucifer is said to be “less likely” to be picked up by Fox. Other titles in development include TNT’s Titans (Blackbirds?), SyFy’s Krypton and AMC’s Preacher. So, DC Entertainment is currently dominating the small screen, with more shows to follow. Stay tuned for more as we have it.
