Matthew McConaughey Discusses Possibility of Starring in a DC Comics Movie

Matthew McConaughey has experienced much success in his movie career in recent years. Last year, he won an Oscar for Best Actor for his role in Dallas Buyer’s Club, starred in HBO’s acclaimed series True Detective and delivered another, er, stellar performance in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. McConaughey is at the height of his popularity right now, and some have wondered if he will go on to star in a comic book movie one day. Now, the actor has expressed some interest in the genre.

In an interview with Variety, McConaughey commented on the differences between low-budget films and big-budget tentpoles. When asked if he would consider starring in a comic book film, the actor says, “I’ve read some Marvel and DC scripts and I’ve talked about working with them on some scripts, none of which I’ll share with with you what they are — or were. Yeah, I’ve circled some of those. Nothing has been right for me yet. But I’m sure open to it.”

Often when an actor joins a comic book movie, he or she would sign a multi-picture contract that would require them to reprise the same role for any potential sequels or spin-offs. McConaughey acknowledges this, and he admits that if he does play a recurring comic book role, there has to be a good reason for him to return to the character and story. “It’s very simple for me. I look at the script. Is the opportunity exciting? Is the money that comes with it exciting? Sure. Is it the possibility of going, “Hey you can get on a train and it can be a franchise and you could do 3, 4, 5, and have a great time as some kind of superhero or anti-hero.” But I would also look at something like that and say, “Hey, in success that means you are on the train for a while.” Contractually, you’re going to return to the character over and over. It’s something I asked myself is it something I’d want to return to. Would I be excited to go back and put the shoes on the character again? Going and doing the press tour with that group of people again? I always ask myself those questions again. It starts with the story and character.”

Some very interesting thoughts here. It is obviously important for an actor to remain invested in a character if he or she will reprise the role multiple times. Another option for McConaughey, if he did not wish to play the same character more than once, is to play a comic book character that will only be around for one film. For example, Guy Pearce shared hesitance over the years about starring in a comic book movie, but he went on to play Aldrich Killian in Marvel’s Iron Man 3. And that character was killed off at the end of the film and is unlikely to ever return. Maybe a similar role for McConaughey could work.
