Phil Lord Confirms THE FLASH Movie Will Star Barry Allen; Promises “Different Take on Superhero Stuff”

After years of development and a highly successful television series, The Flash is finally heading to the big screen in his own movie. Set to hit theaters in 2018, the film will star Ezra Miller as the Scarlet Speedster. Chris Miller and Phil Lord are set to write the story; whether or not they direct is unknown.

It has also been unclear which version of The Flash would be used. Will it be Barry Allen, who is the star of The CW’s hit series? Or is it one of the other people who have taken the identity, such as Wally West? Now, we finally have an answer.

Appearing on the Hippojuice podcast (via /Film), Phil Lord offered an update on The Flash. He confirmed that the movie will likely see Barry Allen in the suit, and he and Miller are working to set the film apart not only from the TV series, but other superhero films too. “We’re trying to break a story. It’s interesting, because there’s a really popular TV show out there, and we’re trying to carve out space for the movie that’s apart from that. I think we’re doing alright. … I believe [our Flash] is going to be Barry Allen. … It’s going to be it’s own [thing, apart from the TV show] — we’re more trying to stick with the cinematic universe… it really is its own thing, and kind of a stand-alone movie. We’re just trying to think of the best story. I think you guys will like it, it’s kind of a different take on superhero stuff.”

Lord went on to comment on the animated Spider-Man movie he is developing with Miller, and how it and The Flash give the writing-directing duo creative freedom. “Chris and I like to carve out spaces where people will let us do what we want. So much of our careers are like ‘oh, no one will bother us while we try to make a 21 Jump Street movie, because it’s such a crazy idea, no one’s going to know what to do with it.’ So we’re doing these things kind of like that. They’re part of these huge franchises, but kind of are off a little bit to the side, and that gives us a lot of creative freedom, and that’s the thing we love. Hopefully we won’t waste that!” The two being given creative freedom with The Flash sounds very promising. Fingers crossed they go on to direct the story that they conceive.

The Flash is set to hit theaters on March 23rd, 2018.
