Designer Colleen Atwood Talks SUPERGIRL, THE FLASH and ARROW Costumes

Colleen Atwood is an Oscar Award winning costume designer
but in the last few years she’s been knee-deep in DC Comics costumes.  She has been a driving force for costumes for
the DCCW-Universe since the Arrow
premiere and she recently spoke with Variety to discuss the process of creating
the perfect Superhero costume.
When they asked how she comes up with an initial concept,
Atwood explains:
Well, in the
opportunities I’ve had to do it, I go from a story point, from where the script
has put the superhero, and then back into the history of that superhero in the
world that [they inhabit], the traditions, and try to come up with something
that has a touch of the old, but makes it a fresh kind of superhero.
Atwood explains that she has to involve the actor or actress
in the design process as despite her experience in designing costumes that
actors and actresses can move freely in, nothing beats seeing the actor or
actress move in the costume.  As an
example, she explains that when she designed the Flash costume she built the
running shoes that Grant Gustin trained for the role with into the costume.
She also explained that part of the fun in designing
costumes is adding personal touches.  She
designed a very subtle lightning bolt motif into the Flash costume and played a
lot with the logo in the designing process.
She also touched on the process of designing Melissa
Benoist’s costume for Supergirl, she
embraced the Americana that’s become so linked with the Superman family and
admits that a lot of her concept was inspired by the strength of the pilot’s
script.
