Guillermo del Toro Explains Why He Exited Warner Bros.’ JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK Movie

For the past couple years, director Guillermo del Toro had been working on a Justice League Dark movie for Warner Bros., with the working title of Dark Universe. A script was turned in a few months back, but more recently, del Toro dropped out of the DC Comics adaptation. Nevertheless, the studio is still interested in moving forward with the movie, with plans to fully integrate it into the DC Extended Universe.

But why exactly did del Toro exit this project? In an interview with The Daily Beast, the director revealed that WB was so pleased with the Justice League Dark script, it wanted del Toro to begin filming within the next few months. Problem is, del Toro had already lined up Pacific Rim 2 to undergo production later this year for a 2017 release. He explains, “Warners liked the script, they were very enthusiastic and wanted to green-light it but they wanted it to coincide with the shoot of Pacific Rim 2. I was put in a very difficult place facing a difficult choice, and I chose to do Pacific Rim 2.”

Del Toro is one of those directors who attaches himself to many different projects at once. And, unsurprisingly, he is unable to make all of those projects. Justice League Dark is now one of them. However, the good news is that WB is loving what it has so far and is eager to continue development. Don’t be surprised if a new director is hired soon. Stay tuned for more as we have it.
