RED Television Adaptation in the Works at NBC

Earlier today, it was announced that NBC had ordered a pilot for a potential DC Comics-inspired series, titled Powerless. Now, the network has added another comic book adaptation to its slate, as Deadline reports that the network has picked up RED.

RED was originally a limited series written by Warren Ellis, and it was published by Homage, an imprint of the now defunct DC Comics imprint WildStorm. The comic was then adapted into two action comedy films, which starred Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Anthony Hopkins and other A-list stars. The story focuses on a group of retired CIA agents who are forced back into action. The RED name stands for “Retired and Extremely Dangerous.”

The RED television show will stay true to the films’ core concept, but “will be set in a more grounded and authentic world, focusing on the characters’ darkly hilarious struggles to survive civilian life as they simultaneously fight for and against the very organization that threw them out.” Screenwriters Jon and Erich Hoeber, as well as producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Vahradian, return for this small screen adaptation. Lionsgate TV is producing.
