Rumor: George Miller to Direct MAN OF STEEL Sequel for Warner Bros.?

Another solo film for Superman was confirmed last year, when Warner Bros. announced its DC Extended Universe lineup. While Man of Steel 2 does not have an official release date yet, it is expected to come sometime by 2020 and after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the two-part Justice League. Today, a rumor has resurfaced regarding who would direct the Man of Steel sequel, and it is definitely a name that would excite fans.

Jon Schnepp, who directed the acclaimed Death of Superman Lives documentary, appeared on the Popcorn Talk Network (via CBR). There, he claimed that George Miller is a lock to direct Man of Steel 2. No further details are given. While Schnepp is at a reputable position in the film industry, it’s best to take this rumor with a pinch of salt for the time being.

This rumor was previously revealed by Heroic Hollywood’s El Mayimbe, who discussed it on the “Meet the Movie Press” show a few weeks back. The site didn’t publish it as an article, however; apparently, this is at such an early stage, it could easily fall apart.

However, Mayimbe offered an update on talks between Miller and WB, in light of the rumor resurfacing. Reportedly, the biggest hurdle in closing this deal is that the two parties can’t agree on what the budget should be. However, Heroic Hollywood’s sources suggest this is a disagreement that can easily be reconciled.

Of course, Miller’s last film, Mad Max: Fury Road, was a huge critical hit and a modest box office success for WB. He came very close to exploring the DC Universe with Justice League: Mortal, before that production was shut down. And Miller is a big fan of DC Comics, so it wouldn’t be shocking if he goes on to helm a DCEU film. Plus, Zack Snyder, who helmed the first Man of Steel, will be busy over the next couple years finalizing Batman v Superman and shooting Justice League. And if Warner wants to get Man of Steel 2 out sooner than later, then a new director will probably be hired.

Then there’s Miller’s desire to do at least one sequel to Fury Road, depending on whether WB wants to move forward with that. If so, that could potentially interfere with the Man of Steel 2 production schedule. But, hopefully Warner will work Miller’s schedule to include both films.

Stay tuned for more news on this as we have it.
