Viola Davis Signed Three-Picture Contract to Play Amanda Waller in the DC Extended Universe

When Viola Davis signed her deal to play Amanda Waller in the Suicide Squad film, it was reported that she had signed on for a multi-picture contract, which is the norm for comic book movie actors these days. It was unspecified exactly how many movies were in Davis’s deal, but now, the actress has confirmed.

In an interview with The New York Times, Davis confirms that she has signed on to play Amanda Waller in three DC films. “This is my first big superhero movie. I signed on for three, so it needed to be a great experience. This was a role that was just there to be fun. It was a chance to work with Will Smith, you know?”

Of course, Suicide Squad is the first film on Davis’s contract, but what are the other two? Did the actress sign on for a potential Suicide Squad trilogy? Will Amanda Waller appear in one or both parts of Justice League? Will she feature in any of the characters’ solo movies? We’ll just have to wait and see.

In a separate interview with Deadline, Davis talked more about her role in Suicide Squad. She confirmed that she will finish filming her scenes this weekend, with production on the film coming to a close. She shared her thoughts on the DC Comics mythology, and how writer-director David Ayer approaches it with this film. “DC Comics have a tendency to have darker characters. You know, Batman is a darker character, Harley Quinn, the Joker, and what David Ayer has managed to do is humanize them. I think that you see it in the trailer too–just something different about it that makes you lean in. What he’s explored is the pathology behind all of these characters, so you just get that extra spin that gives you the flavor and a look which is very different. And at the same time you get all the stuff that you’ve gotten before, which is the action, the special effects, the great makeup. I’m blown away by the movie. Once I saw the trailer, I was like, ‘Oh, my God. He really is a magician.’ I mean, I had no idea. So, it’s been a real pleasure working on it with David Ayer.”

Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theaters August 5th, 2016. The third installment in the DC Extended Universe stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Cara Delevingne, Viola Davis, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Adam Beach, Jay Hernandez and Karen Fukahara. David Ayer writes and directs.
