SUICIDE SQUAD Stills Officially Released; David Ayer Explains How Film is “Comic Book Movie 2.0”

After scanned versions were revealed earlier this week, Empire Magazine has officially released some of the new Suicide Squad stills online. The images feature characters such as Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, Amanda Waller and, of course, The Joker. Check them out below.

Additionally, writer-director David Ayer spoke with Empire (via CBM) about how  Suicide Squad stands out from the rest of the comic book movie genre. The film will mark the first CBM to focus on the villains, rather than the heroes, but how else is it different? Ayer explains, “You know, all these movies are about defeating the evil alien robot from [bleep]ing Planet X, before it destroys the world with its ticking clock. And who the [bleep] cares? But you do this story about struggle and isolation and people who have been s**t on that suddenly get thrown this lifeline… that’s not so bad… I like to think of this as the Comic Book Movie 2.0.” Very valid points from Ayer here.

But how did Suicide Squad end up on Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe slate? Producer Charles Roven reveals that Ayer pitched his take on Task Force X while the studio was crafting its DC movie vision. “We’d just started shooting Batman v Superman, we were figuring out our path through the expanding DC Justice League universe. Then David Ayer came and pitched his take on Suicide Squad. It had this darkness and edge, while still tonally in the zone of what we’re trying to do with these movies. And it’s impossible that you could get a big tentpole picture from pitch to start of principal photography and faster than we did.”

Stay tuned for more news as we have it.
