Charles Roven Discusses the DC Extended Universe Brain Trust and How the Solo Films Connect to JUSTICE LEAGUE

So far, we’ve heard that the creative team bringing the DC Extended Universe to life are director Zack Snyder, DC’s Geoff Johns, and producers Deborah Snyder and Charles Roven. This brain trust is dedicated to bringing many fan-favorite DC characters to life on the big screen, beginning with next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. Many more movies are coming within the next few years, including Wonder Woman, The Flash and a two-part Justice League.

But how exactly does the brain trust work? Charles Roven discusses this in an interview with Collider. He reaffirms that he is working with Johns and the Snyders on this venture, and he adds that Warner Bros. executive vice president Jon Berg is “very much involved” in the group. “I’m working with great people. They’re all really great people. And not that we don’t—there are many times we agree, and there’s many times we don’t agree [and] we work it out.”

In addition to this brain trust, the DCEU is taking a filmmaker-driven approach. Roven comments on how that works for the mega-franchise, and he also discusses developing these characters over the course of several movies. “The other thing that I really love about what we’re doing is we’re also bringing in really talented other filmmakers and having them come in and create—I call it the sandbox. We’ve got this sandbox of the Justice League DC characters, and we are hoping to create—this series of movies that we’ve announced are somewhat interlinked. The characters move at a throughline that hopefully will take us all the way to Justice League 2, but they also can interact in the other films as well in some way.”

Roven then elaborates on the inter-connectivity of these films; specifically, how the solo superhero movies connect to Justice League. The producer explains that in some films, the character will have evolved from the previous installment. But in others, they make tell the character’s origin story instead. “So if, for example, The Flash movie or the Aquaman film is gonna come out after Justice League 1, it’s not gonna be a completely different character; that character will have evolved from Justice League 1. Wonder Woman, when we see her in Justice League 1, will have evolved from Batman v Superman. Unless we decide that in one of these stories we’re gonna do something that happened in the past and have it be more of an origination story, in which case you’ll realize how that character became what they were in the movie that they were first introduced.”

The Wonder Woman movie is rumored to be an origin tale for Diana Prince, taking place before the events of Batman v Superman. It’s possible that they’ll tell the Flash and Aquaman’s origin stories in their own movies set before the events of Justice League Part One as well. But, we’ll see.
