Kevin Smith Wants to See the DC Films and TV Shows Crossover Via the Multiverse

For years, fans have been debating whether or not DC’s television shows should cross over with Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe. Some want to see the likes of Arrow and The Flash connect to Justice League, while others think it is best to keep the two separate. Ezra Miller’s casting as the DCEU’s Flash and the Suicide Squad movie, among other things, confirmed once and for all that the two mediums did not exist in the same universe. However, is a Multiverse a possibility?

Kevin Smith recently co-hosted The CW’s “Dawn of the Justice League” special, which offered a new look at the DCEU, with Geoff Johns. Appearing on his “Fatman on Batman” podcast (transcription via ComicBook.com), Smith reflected on parts of his conversation with Johns that were cut from the final version. He asked why the movies would create a new version of Flash when the television series is doing so well.

Then, Smith suggested to Johns that the two mediums can crossover, courtesy of a staple in DC Comics lore: the Multiverse. “And we did a piece where we talked about, I don’t know how much I’m supposed to say because they cut it out, and I was kind of bummed they cut it out. But the idea of, ‘Hey man, DC is known for nothing if not a multiverse,’ so at which point I was like, ‘Could they [bleep]ing crossover?’ And he was like, ‘Ahhhhh.’ So doors are being left open and stuff like that for… think about this, you can have Ezra Miller be The Flash and you could also have Grant be The Flash, because there’s a multiverse at work.”

The Flash show introduced the Multiverse this season, revealing that infinite Earths exist simultaneously. It is entirely plausible that one of these Earths could be the DC Extended Universe. But will that tool actually be utilized to combine the two worlds? Time will tell.

Personally, I think Warner Bros. made the best decision regarding the film and TV properties. Let the TV shows continue to craft their own stories and continuity, while the movies can also do their own thing without having to adhere to several seasons of television that came before them. Give both mediums a sufficient amount of creative freedom to create the best shows/movies possible. However, a Multiverse crossover wouldn’t have too much of an impact on continuity, since they’re entirely different timelines. So, that would be a win-win for both sides of the debate.

Again, though, this is far from confirmation that the two worlds will ever meet. And frankly, I’d be surprised if they ever did. But, again, only time will tell.
