More Highlights From Empire’s BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE Coverage

The latest issue of Empire Magazine, which covers Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, is out now. And we continue to receive more and more info on the movie from this issue.

Batman-News has shared some more interesting details from the issue. What did The Dark Knight Trilogy director Christopher Nolan think about Zack Snyder helming the new reboot of Batman? Who else did Snyder meet with for the Batman role? When did Warner Bros. begin to discuss the idea of a Batman/Superman film? All that and more can be found below.

  • Zack Snyder sought Christopher Nolan’s blessing before committing to Batman v Superman. Nolan gave the blessing, but according to Snyder, the filmmaker found it a “little bit hard” to let go. Nolan said, “Well, we don’t own these characters. When you’re done making Batman movies, someone else will.”
  • Before Ben Affleck was cast, Snyder met with Josh Brolin and Richard Armitage about playing Batman. Brolin has been particularly vocal about these meetings afterwards, admitting that talks didn’t work out (obviously). Meanwhile, Armitage was also a reported contender back in 2013, and he was my personal favorite for the role. But, I am now 100% behind Affleck.
  • Affleck was hesitant about taking the role, however. Apparently, would have turned it down if Batman v Superman was just a sequel to The Dark Knight Trilogy. Clearly it’s not, and Affleck loved Snyder’s take on Batman enough to commit to the role for several movies.
  • Bruce Wayne was present in Metropolis when Superman and General Zod threw down in Man of Steel. During the battle, a Wayne Enterprises building was destroyed. There, Bruce “…lost people he was very close to during the destruction. People he could call family.”
  • Before being cast as Lex Luthor, Jesse Eisenberg met with Snyder for a different role in Batman v Superman. However, Snyder was so impressed with Eisenberg – largely due to his Social Network performance – that he cast him as Luthor himself. Apparently, Lex is “…witty and charming in public, but full of rage behind closed doors.”
  • When Batman v Superman was announced, many fans criticized the concept, claiming that Warner Bros. was only doing this because Man of Steel underperformed at the box office – or some nonsense like that. However, talks of making Batman v Superman the next movie began just weeks before Man of Steel was released. Snyder previously admitted that the idea began as a Bruce Wayne Easter egg, before expanding to having Superman fight Batman in the next film.
  • Henry Cavill was in outstanding shape in Man of Steel, but he went even bigger for Batman v Superman, gaining a whopping 30 pounds of muscle. Additionally, when Cavill would disagree with Snyder about the psychology of Superman, “…they would both do push-ups until someone gave in.” Sounds fun.
For even more Batman v Superman tidbits – including Cavill’s Clark Kent, a “hands-on” Alfred and where Bruce Wayne currently resides – head over to Batman-News at the link above.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is scheduled to hit theaters March 25th. The second installment in the DC Extended Universe stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter and Gal Gadot. Zack Snyder directs from a script by Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer.
