Zack Snyder Talks Doomsday’s Reveal, Exploring His Mythology and Creating the DC Extended Universe

In an interview with The Daily Beast, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder talks in detail about the film’s secondary villain, Doomsday. Long rumored to be appearing in the movie, the character was finally revealed in last month’s third (final?) trailer. This has led to some mixed reactions from fans. Some said Doomsday shouldn’t have been in the trailer, while others said that it’s “too early” for the character – who killed Superman in an iconic comic book story – to come to the big screen.

Snyder admits that there was much conversation between him and Warner Bros. regarding how much of the movie to put out in the marketing, saying, “We had a long conversation about just taking ownership of that, of giving it to the audience in a controlled way that I felt was consistent with the escalation of the campaign.”

As for why Doomsday is in Batman v Superman, Snyder says that the character plays a role in expanding the greater DC Extended Universe. “To us it really made sense to give [Doomsday] to the audience now. I really wanted to make the audience a promise that… though I’m super excited and happy and fulfilled by the conflict of Batman and Superman, there’s also a bigger world to start to think about.”

The DCEU will obviously expand greatly with next year’s Justice League Part One, which Snyder will direct this year in London. When asked about the “bigger enemy” that he recently teased, the director says that Doomsday’s mythology has to be explored. “Well, you have Doomsday, right? He doesn’t just crawl out of the ground. He has his own mythology, right? So that has to be explored…” So, does this mean Doomsday will return in Justice League? Or is Snyder simply referring to exploring the mythology in Batman v Superman and potentially future films? We’ll have to wait and see.

Snyder then talks about the process of creating the DCEU, as well as his creation of the mega-franchise’s roadmap. “It is constantly evolving, but we’re starting to get a handle on where we’re going with the world. That’s fun because it allows us now to be driving toward a goal that we don’t have to make up as much. The rules can be the rules, and the movie can exist in a closed universe… it allows us to tie things together. If there’s a movie over here doing this, and we’re over here doing this, now we’re all on the same page.”

Snyder adds, “It allows for a coherent universe, which is important. I think that makes the experience a little more satisfying because we know where we’re going, so the misdirects can be stronger and the reveals can be bigger.”
