Zack Snyder Talks WONDER WOMAN and His Concern About Spoilers

With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice under three months away, director Zack Snyder has started to give a little more detail on what to expect from the characters of the film. In this case, Snyder talks to Filmink, about Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and addresses fan complaints about the second trailer spoiling the entire film.

Many fans have complained about the casting of Gal Gadot ever since it was announced as she’s an unknown actress with little experience, but Zack Snyder assures us that she was by far the best choice for the role saying:  “We tested a bunch of actresses, as you can imagine. But the thing with Gal is that she’s strong, she’s beautiful, and she’s a kind person, which is interesting, but fierce at the same time. It’s that combination of being fierce but kind at the same time that we were looking for. She can get serious, but she’s amazingly fun to be around. And by the way, she really held her own with Ben in the screen test. Ben was like, ‘Whoa, that girl is something else!’ That was a good sign, because Ben is very tough in the scene, and he’s big and commanding. Anytime that you’re doing a test like that and you’re looking at the other person, you’re thinking, ‘Okay, that’s good stuff.’ That was part of the process, and over time as we got to know Gal, we found out how amazing she is.” It seemed that Gadot beat out over one hundred women for the role Snyder adds;  “I can’t even remember how many in terms of interviews, but for the final test, I think that we tested six actresses. But we interviewed and saw hundreds, so it was a pretty exhausting process.”

Snyder isn’t taking this film lightly, this is Wonder Woman’s big screen debut and it should do the character justice (no pun intended). “It’s an amazing opportunity to have Wonder Woman in the film. We haven’t had a female superhero of that magnitude, and it’s an amazing opportunity for the world to get behind an amazing, powerful female character. I’m happy that we have the opportunity to do that. Half of my movies have female leads…maybe that’s because I have so many strong women in my life. I’m not in the least surprised by a strong female superhero. I’m shocked that it hasn’t happened sooner. By the way, I highly recommend Jill Lepore’s book, The Secret History Of Wonder Woman, if you haven’t read it; it’s amazing, and truly epic.”

It seems that Wonder Woman, while having a smaller role than Batman and Superman, might have a larger role in the film than we might expect. Snyder adds: “No, she has a cameo in this movie. No, actually… it’s bigger than a cameo. She comes in and does something.” What could that something be? Whatever she does we know that it leads to her teaming up with the Dark Knight and Man of Steel. “Well, they’re forced together, which you get a sense of from the trailer. They’re forced to work together.” Even though they’re forced to work together Batman and Superman quickly learn to listen to the princess “You’ve got to listen to Wonder Woman because what Wonder Woman wants, Wonder Woman gets, that’s just how it is.” This will be fun.

Speaking of the trailer, in an interview with MTV, Zack Snyder talk about the latest trailer. If you were worried about the second trailer spoiling the film you’re in luck, as Snyder, the one who made the film says there’s still plenty in store. “I have the benefit of seeing the movie, It’s cool that they think it’s too much and I appreciate people not wanting to know, but there’s plenty that they don’t know. There’s a lot of movie that’s not in the trailer.” Of course this trailer wasn’t the only thing that apparently spoiled the movie. It seems that a fan saw a screening of the film and spoiled the entire film on Reddit. Snyder completely debunks this and calls it “hilarious”, but he also acknowledges that spoilers suck! “Of course I hate it when any spoilers come out!” he said. “You design the movie as a story that evolves as you watch it, so moment-to-moment [you’re thinking], ‘Oh my god, what’s going to happen next? Are they gonna live? Are they gonna die?’ So you want that experience for the audience, as much as you can. If you’re, as an audience member, exploring these articles, looking for answers to questions that you have, maybe you’re okay with knowing before you go. It’s like an individual taste. But like I said, I want people to see the movie without knowing.”  It seems there is much more in store for us when we see the film for ourselves.

One of the complaints about the second trailer was that Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor came across too quirky. Zack Snyder says that there is more than meets the eye when it comes to Lex “In the trailer, of course he comes across in a very specific way,” said Snyder. He and “Argo screenwriter Chris Terrio had a lot of conversations about their interpretation of Lex Luthor before Eisenberg took the role. “In the movie, he’s like a million times more sophisticated than what you get in 30 seconds. But that’s also the fun of it. That’s why you go to the movies, so you can actually see the context and understand the depth.” Once again, it seems we can’t judge the film until we see it for ourselves. Thankfully we aren’t that far out. For more on Batman v Superman and the rest of the DC Extended Universe, stay tuned.
