Zack Snyder Talks The DC Film/Television “Multi-Universe” and Other Justice Leaguers’ Roles in BATMAN V SUPERMAN

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder recently appeared on the Hall of Justice Podcast, where he talked in detail about the DC Films.

First off, Snyder weighs in on the decision to keep DC’s television shows separate from the DC Extended Universe, something that has been a bit polarizing among some fans. Snyder expresses nothing but love for the TV side of DC Entertainment, saying, “The bottom line for me is: I have 100% respect and love what they’re doing on TV. I think it’s amazing… and it speaks to the iconographic nature of these characters – these characters are bigger than any of the actors that are playing them. You know, long after I’m done making a Batman/Superman movie there’ll be someone else who makes it. You know, who makes another one. It’s almost like an American tradition now, we’ve established that these characters will be played and played again, and they exist outside of us in this moment.”

Snyder then explains why the “Multiverse” approach works best for the DC brand. “So that’s the thing that I’ve embraced, and as opposed to just trying to shoehorn all these story lines into a single universe, we let the characters exist in multi-universe, and therefore it’s a lot more fun and it’s a lot more value for the audience. They get to see their favorite and most beloved characters on different adventures at the same time, in different universes. And it really makes the meal a lot richer and a lot more fun. And I think that’s really the joy of what we’re trying to do over here at DC.” Personally, I am in complete agreement with Snyder on this. Batman v Superman will focus primarily on, well, Batman and Superman, with Wonder Woman playing a key supporting role. Other members of the Justice League – Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg – are also set to appear in the movie. However, Snyder confirms that the latter three have “very small” roles in Batman v Superman to show that they exist in this universe. “As far as the other Justice League characters go, they play a very small role. It’s really just a whisper they exist. Except for Wonder Woman, we see her really well. But really the movie is about Batman and Superman. And we really take time with them and we really drill down on the why of them and what they stand for and their beliefs and them as characters. That’s pretty much the why of the movie.
