Recap: SUPERGIRL Season One, Episode Sixteen ‘Falling’

WARNING: This review contains spoilers.

This episode starts out really sweet; We see Kara doing what she does best, being Supergirl. She helps a young girl who is being bullied, and saves firemen from a burning building. Everything is going well for our heroine, and she seemingly saves the day. Unfortunately she is exposed to the newly discovered Red Kryptonite. A substance that mirrors Green Kryptonite’s affect Kryptonians, but it affects them mentally rather than physically. For most of the episode we are accompanied by who I like to call “Darth Kara”. She is fierce and is the complete opposite of the mild-mannered Girl Scout we’ve come accustomed to seeing. I loved Darth Kara! Melissa Benoist really brought her A-game week. Seeing Kara take on this new personality was pretty fun. It also brought a new normal to the show. Her relationship with James, Alex, and Cat won’t be the same (at least for the next couple weeks). Not to mention how the rest of National City views her. It’s definitely going to interesting to see how it plays out.

Probably the biggest moment in this episode was when Hank was revealed to the world as Martian Manhunter. This was huge, and now Hank is now a prisoner of the D.E.O. I don’t know how they’ll deal with this mess, but I’m sure Hank will be free by season’s end.
One of the things I really liked was how everything flowed within the main story. We have dark Kara hitting on James, Siobhan getting fired, and Cat turning the city against Supergirl. All of these major storylines are directly tied to the Red Kryptonite. We even have Darth Kara turning on Alex and Hank! The scenes between Alex and Kara were really well done. You really felt the emotion when Darth Kara was talking to Alex. It was a hit right in the feels. The same can be said about the scenes between Cat and Supergirl. When she tossed Cat off of the roof, it was intense! Hopefully we can see this kind of drama and emotion a little more often; even though we probably won’t see Darth Kara again.

The only problem I have with this episode was Maxwell Lord’s story. He tried to recreate Kryptonite to stop Non and the rest of the Kryptonians. Of course, things didn’t go as planned as thus Red Kryptonite was born! Max placed the Kryptonite on the burning roof top attract Non, but Supergirl arrived instead. First off, he expected a villain to stop a burning building? Not only that but he expected Supergirl not to show up? This entire plan was ridiculous and was doomed to fail from the start; and then he then tries to help the D.E.O. to cure Supergirl. None of this adds up, and it seems out of character for Max. It would’ve flowed a little better if he purposely affected Kara, and used her as his guinea pig.

Overall, another good episode. There was good set up for the rest of the season, and great character moments. Now the only question is when is Non going to strike next? Or will yet another villain arrive to start more trouble? We’ll see next week as Kara tries to put her life back together, and move on from this mess. Thanks for reading, and come back next week for the next Supergirl recap!
