James Wan Teases AQUAMAN’s Villains and Bringing His “Unique” World to Life

Director James Wan is currently promoting his new film, The Conjuring 2. But inevitably, he has also talked more about his next project, DC Films’ Aquaman. In a new interview with Cinema Blend, the filmmaker further discusses his desire to make Aquaman different from every other superhero movie.

Wan praises the “interesting” supporting cast in Aquaman’s mythos, and he implies that we’ll see more than one villain in the movie. “I gotta say, one thing I love about the Aquaman world is all the really different, really interesting characters. They are interesting characters, including the villains – I’m not going to tell you which villains I’m going to play with! But they’re super cool. They’re very larger than life, but they’re unique.”

Aquaman has a very interesting rogues gallery. His main antagonist is arguably Orm/Ocean Master, his brother. Other villains include Black Manta, King Shark and the Trench. Given Wan’s experience with horror movies, it would be particularly cool to see his take on the Trench monsters. Which villains would you like to see in the upcoming film?

Meanwhile, Wan reaffirms that he loves how unique Aquaman’s world is. With the current increase in superhero movies, the challenge is there to make one that completely stands out from the norm. Wan acknowledges this, saying that Aquaman is more than capable of being unique. “There’s a reason why they’ve never made a movie about this until now, because technology has never allowed us to tackle something this complicated. And so because of that it feels like something different, and that uniqueness is what I’m excited about.”

With press junkets for The Conjuring 2, expect more Aquaman-related interviews from Wan in the near future.

Aquaman is set to hit theaters on July 27th, 2018. Jason Momoa and Amber Heard star.
