BATMAN ARKHAM Is Finished; Rocksteady Says Farewell To The Dark Knight

Batman: Arkham VR is just around the corner; and it will mark the end of Rocksteady Studios’ Arkham franchise. Producer Dax Ginn spoke with Eurogamer saying: “We submitted [Batman VR to Sony] last week which was an awesome experience.” The game is completely done and will hit store (or PlayStation Network) shelves in a matter of days. It’s nice to hear that the game is ready to go, but what’s next for the studio?

We really want to know what’s their next console or VR experience. Sadly, Ginn seems like he doesn’t know more than we do. When Eurogamer posed the question to Ginn he replied saying: “To be honest I don’t really know, we’re in a very enviable position where we have some time and space to decide what we’re doing next,” he continues, saying: “We can sit back and think what our dream game would be, and we have Warner Bros.’ support to do that.” While it’s nice to in know that Rocksteady is free to make whatever IP they want; it’s hard for me to believe that they don’t have a plan for the future. I mean just last year they were saying Batman: Arkham Knight would be their final installment in the Arkham series.

Ginn went on to say: “I think we’ve proven that we’re a hardworking team, we work well together, and we can really decide what’s best creatively for our own destiny.”  But what is their destiny? Will they be making original content or will they tackle another DC character? Maybe another member of DC’s Trinity?

Whatever the case, Ginn says that Arkham VR is a bittersweet end to their beloved franchise, but it’s also a new beginning for the Studio: “I think there’s a little bit of sadness on the team,” Ginn concludes with: “It feels like… breaking up? [The mood] is really split – there’s a feeling in the office like, it’s definitely time to do something else – we all accept that. But we all know Batman so well – we all feel comfortable in the Arkhamverse. We’re definitely letting go of that comfort blanket and putting ourselves in the position where whatever we do next is going to feel very different. There’s always an anxiety associated with change and that’s where we want to be. We want to feel uncomfortable because we want to make awesome stuff.

It’s sad to see Rocksteady leave the Arkhamverse, but we’ll be keeping a close eye on where this new journey takes them. I talked about the DC characters I’d like to see get their own video game series; click here if you’re interested. What would like to see from Rocksteady in the future? They’ve been linked to Superman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the past, but nothing has been confirmed. Personally I’d like to see them make their own IP.
