Director Rick Famuyiwa Exits THE FLASH Movie

Earlier this year, Seth Grahame-Smith dropped out of directing DC Films’ The Flash due to “creative differences.” Specifically, Warner Bros. was hesitant about a first-time director taking on one of its big tentpole films. So, while Grahame-Smith’s script was kept, a new filmmaker had to be hired.

In June, Rick Famuyiwa was hired to tackle the superhero film. Since then, the director has talked about it on social media, began casting characters, and even appeared at San Diego Comic-Con alongside other DC directors.

Unfortunately, it looks like The Flash needs a new director…again. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Famuyiwa has dropped out of the movie due to, you guessed it, creative differences. The filmmaker explains his departure in a statement, citing his excitement to work with Ezra Miller and some of DC’s most iconic characters. “I pitched a version of the film in line with my voice, humor and heart. While it’s disappointing that we couldn’t come together creatively on the project, I remain grateful for the opportunity. I will continue to look for opportunities to tell stories that speak to a fresh generational, topical and multicultural point of view. I wish Warner Bros., DC, Jon Berg, Geoff Johns and Ezra Miller all the best as they continue their journey into the speed force.”

THR elaborates on the “creative differences” between Famuyiwa and Warner Bros. Apparently, the director had an “edgier” take on the DC movie, while the studio had its own vision.

The Flash was eyeing a March production start date for a 2018 release. However, with the director’s chair empty and Miller having another commitment for next July, the start date and, subsequently, the release date will probably be pushed back. Don’t be surprised if the movie is delayed to a 2019 or an even later theatrical release.

So, this is another setback in The Flash‘s journey to the big screen. However, while we have to wait longer for his own movie, Barry Allen will be popping up in Justice League next November. He also had cameos in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad this year.
