Charles Roven Explains His Current Role in Producing DC Films

A few months ago, it was reported that longtime DC movie producer Charles Roven is no longer produce certain films. As a producer, Roven’s role includes being on location throughout the entire production of a film.

However, Warner Bros. is going to have two or more DC films in production next year – Aquaman, The Batman, and possibly The Flash and maybe even Gotham City Sirens. So obviously, it is physically impossible for Roven to be on set day-by-day for every single movie. Thus, he won’t be producing Aquaman or Flash.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Roven explains how his tweaked role in the DC Extended Universe came about. He rehashes the “why” of it all, but that doesn’t mean he’s completely absent from the DC Films team. “The studio made me the producer of all the DC movies, and they announced eight. When we finished the [timetable], we looked at each other and said, ‘This is incredibly ambitious, but we haven’t taken into consideration if something goes wrong.’ We also hadn’t decided where we were going to shoot those movies. As difficult as it was for me to commute from Toronto to London to Italy, it became really clear I couldn’t do the job that I do as a producer. I’m for sure producing the sequels of the movies that I have made.”

So far, Roven has produced Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman and Justice League. (Not counting Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy.) Should any of these films get sequels, then Roven will definitely be on board as producer.

Roven then discusses the next two films in the DCEU. He reaffirms that Justice League will have a lighter tone than Batman v Superman, and he has this to say about how Wonder Woman will be different. Wonder Woman is an origination story, so the whole dynamic and the plot moves are different than other DC movies. There’s also a great relationship between her and the guy [Steve Trevor] who crash-lands on her island and is the trigger mechanism for her going back to man’s world.”
