Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam to Star in His Own Movie, Separate from SHAZAM

Dwayne Johnson has been attached to play anti-hero Black Adam in New Line Cinema’s Shazam movie for a few years. The film will take place in the DC Extended Universe, and the studio previously announced an April 2019 release. Now, Warner Bros. has big plans for the property, splitting it off into two films.

It has been announced (via The Hollywood Reporter) that Johnson will star in a Black Adam standalone movie, which will be separate from Shazam. A director and screenwriter have yet to be hired. Johnson is producing both movies alongside Hiram Garcia.

This move happens after Johnson’s meeting with DC Entertainment, which led to a retooling of Shazam. The Rock has become one of the biggest action stars in recent years, so it’d make sense for him to star in his own film, rather than play a supporting role in another. Plus, THR’s Borys Kit says that the plan is for Shazam to have another villain, with Black Adam potentially appearing in a sequel.

This is certainly an interesting direction to take this potential franchise. It takes advantage of Johnson’s star power, and Shazam could stand out on its own – at least for the first movie – without being overshadowed by The Rock. It’ll be intriguing to see what happens next.

Stay tuned for more as we have it.
