SUICIDE SQUAD Director David Ayer Reflects on What He Would Have Done Differently

DC Films’ Suicide Squad was one of the highest grossing movies of 2016, making a whopping $745.6 million worldwide. Despite the commercial success, the film received negative reviews from critics and polarized fans. Common complaints include the messy script, unfocused storyline, and the horrible Enchantress.

Now that the movie has come and gone, what does writer-director David Ayer think? Replying to a fan on Twitter, Ayer acknowledged the controversy that Suicide Squad spawned, while also addressing the negative reviews, the movie’s flaws, and more.

Most interestingly, Ayer reflects on what he would have done differently if he went back in time and made the movie all over again. He says that he would have The Joker the main antagonist, instead of Enchantress. Also, he would have created a more grounded storyline. You can read Ayer’s full comments below.

Personally, I would have preferred to see a more grounded Suicide Squad film with Joker as the big bad. One of my issues with the movie was its third act, which felt like every superhero movie ever. It was generic and over-the-top. To me, a Suicide Squad movie is a great opportunity to explore the more grounded side of the DC Extended Universe, and I felt like that was wasted.
Of course, this isn’t Ayer’s only opportunity to explore the DCEU. He is attached to direct the spin-off Gotham City Sirens, which stars Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Hopefully, he will take the lessons learned from Suicide Squad and apply them to this film. Also, Warner Bros. is planning a sequel to Suicide Squad, while a spinoff starring Will Smith’s Deadshot is being considered.
Suicide Squad is now available on Blu-Ray, DVD and digital download.
