Andrew Kreisberg Teases Plans for Proper Four-Way Arrowverse Crossover Next Year

Last fall, The CW aired the epic “Invasion!” crossover with Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. However, if one show got the short end of the stick in the event, it was definitely the former. The only crossover on Supergirl was a 30 second scene, which was included in the Flash episode anyways. Kara then appeared on the other shows, but no one from her supporting cast came in.

At a recent press event (via Entertainment Weekly), executive producer Andrew Kreisberg addressed this, confirming that plans are underway for a “true” four-way crossover next fall. “Next year, we’re hoping to do a true four-way crossover. The great thing about our dear friends at the CW and [network president] Mark Pedowitz picking the shows up as early as they did has allowed us to start building the schedules for next season.”

Kreisberg then discusses the behind-the-scenes creation of the crossovers, saying that availability of the actors is the hardest factor. To accommodate this, the crew creates “shut down days” for the shows, so that they shoot the crossover rather than other episodes. Unfortunately, Supergirl wasn’t able to have these shut down days.

Kreisberg explains, “The thing that we didn’t really plan on – because we weren’t aware that we were going to switch Supergirl from CBS to CW and it was really going to be part of it – that was the one show that didn’t have built-in shut-down days, so all the other ones did. Melissa [Benoist] ended up being heavily in Flash and then in Arrow, so Supergirl was the one we needed to shut down the most and it was the one that we didn’t have any opportunity to. Now that we’ve gotten the early pickup and we’ve started designing the seasons, we’re building in those dark days, and actually more dark days on Supergirl than the other shows, to make it a little easier.”

So, fans hoping that Supergirl will have a bigger role in next year’s crossover should be pleased to hear this news. Of course, no further details on the event are known, but all four of the shows have been renewed for next season. And with Greg Berlanti’s Black Lightning pilot moving to The CW, could they find a way to extend it to a five-way crossover? Would be crazy, but we’ll have to wait and see.
