THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE Wins Opening Weekend with $53 Million

The LEGO Batman Movie finally opened this weekend, and it faces stiff competition in the form of sequels Fifty Shades Darker and John Wick: Chapter 2. Now, the estimates are in. and the Dark Knight returns to the top of the box office.

LEGO Batman has opened with about $53 million domestically, placing it at #1. It beats Fifty Shades‘ $46.6m intake. While this is a great figure, it is a little lower than the expected $60M+ debut. It’s also less than The LEGO Movie‘s $69M opening back in 2014, but that film opened with much less competition. Plus, bad weather on the East Coast could have played a factor.

Overseas, LEGO Batman opened with $37.2 million from 60 markets. This brings its worldwide total to around $90.2 million. The movie has already made back its $80 million production budget, and it will likely have some strong legs for the next few weeks, resulting in a very profitable film for Warner Bros.
