Director Jon Watts Will (Probably) Return for SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Sequel; Title and Filming Date Teased

Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters next week, but Marvel and Sony are already going full speed ahead on a sequel. The second film in the proposed trilogy is scheduled for July 5th, 2019, and it will follow Tom Holland’s Peter Parker after the events of the next two Avengers films. The sequel is also expected to bring in another MCU character, filling the void left by Iron Man.

Now, we have more news. Speaking with Collider, producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal confirm that they intend to bring director Jon Watts back for the Homecoming sequel. Pascal offers nothing but praise for the filmmaker, who makes his big budget debut with Homecoming. “He knocked it out of the park. We would be crazy [not to bring him back]. He did a wonderful job and the whole atmosphere of the movie, all the things that people like about it are the things he brought to it. He’s really special.” As for Watts himself, he remains mum on details, but he says he is signed on to do two movies.

Both of the prior Spider-Man movie series maintained the same directors throughout their runs. Sam Raimi directed the entire trilogy with Tobey Maguire, while Marc Webb helmed both Amazing Spider-Man movies with Andrew Garfield. So, if Watts did as great a job on Homecoming as it seems, then it would make sense to keep him on board for at least one movie.

But what would the Homecoming sequel be called? While he can’t confirm the exact title, Feige tells Collider that it will definitely be Spider-Man: [Subtitle]. Unlike past Spider-Man sequels, there will not be a “2” in the title. As for when production will begin, Pascal says that they are “…thinking about starting [filming] in April or May this time.” The first movie began production in June of last year.

Stay tuned for more news as we have it.
