James Gunn Teases How GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Sets Up Future Marvel Cosmic Stories

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 came out this summer, and it has been yet another winner for the studio. The sequel outgrossed its predecessor, while James Gunn was hired to write and direct the third installment. Gunn is the first to direct all three movies in a Marvel Studios trilogy. It was previously teased that Vol. 3 will end the current team’s story, but now, we have some hints on how it sets up the future.

Speaking with IGN, Gunn comments on his future in the MCU, specifically the cosmic side of this universe. He is constantly talking with Kevin Feige and Marvel about bringing in other cosmic elements, and he says that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will play a key role in setting up future stories. “When we’re talking about Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and that story, that’s a story that will lead to other stories. It’s innate to the DNA that that’s the end of a trilogy but it’s the beginning of a whole other element of the Marvel Cosmic universe. That’s a part of what I’m doing now.” Gunn also confirms that the Kronans will return in the future; one member of this alien race, Korg, will appear in Thor: Ragnarok.

The cosmic side of the Marvel Universe is very vast, having the potential to tell dozens of stories on film. There are plenty of characters who have yet to debut in the franchise, such as Nova and countless alien races. Also, the original Guardians (Stakar’s team, as seen in Vol. 2) are expected to return in future films, while Captain Marvel is coming in 2019. So, there are many ways to continue exploring the cosmic side of the MCU without relying on Star-Lord and the crew.

Stay tuned for more news as we have it. A release date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has yet to be confirmed.
