Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal Clarify – Sony's SPIDER-MAN "Spinoffs" Are Separate from the MCU

Originally, it was reported that Sony’s slate of films based on Spider-Man characters, including Venom and Silver & Black, would be set in their own universe, rather than the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Kevin Feige confirmed this in interviews, saying that Marvel Studios isn’t involved. However, Sony’s Amy Pascal strongly implied in a recent interview that these projects do, in fact, take place in the MCU. Clearly, this confused a lot of people. But now, we have clarification.

Speaking with Comic Book, Pascal and Feige clarify that Sony’s “spinoffs” are, indeed, separate from the MCU. Pascal explains, “Here’s what we’re doing: all these characters are a part of the Marvel comic book universe. In that universe, they are all related to each other. Kevin [Feige] makes characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These characters are separate, except for Spidey, who belongs in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is why he’s there.” So, these new movies do take place in their own continuity, while Spider-Man himself is in the MCU. These comments also seem to go against recent reports that Sony is interested in bringing Tom Holland’s Spidey in to these spinoffs.

However, Feige takes the “never say never” approach when asked if a Spider-Man/Venom crossover was never, ever, ever going to happen. He just says that there aren’t any plans for the foreseeable future. So, unless Sony and Marvel change their minds in the next few months or whatever, don’t expect Venom or Black Cat to pop up in an MCU film.

In addition to Venom and Silver & Black, Sony is reportedly developing movies starring Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio. Venom is rumored to be targeting an R rating, and if the other films follow suit, we could be in for a more adult-oriented comic book universe.

Stay tuned for more as we have it. Venom is scheduled to hit theaters on October 5th, 2018. Both it and Silver & Black are expected to begin shooting this fall.
