Warner Bros. President Teases WONDER WOMAN 2’s Time Period and Possibility of an R-Rated DC Movie

Earlier today, Variety published a profile piece on Toby Emmerich, who was promoted to President and Chief Content Officer at Warner Bros. Pictures back in December. The profile comes on the heels of Wonder Woman‘s huge success, which further cements the studio’s desire to explore the DC Universe on the big screen. Now, Emmerich has offered some teases on the franchise’s future.

During his interview with Variety, Emmerich reaffirms that Patty Jenkins is already working on the Wonder Woman sequel. She is writing a story treatment with Geoff Johns, while a new deal for her to direct must be finalized. While the sequel will move away from the World War I era, it’s “likely” that it will take place in the past again. Emmerich simply says, “It will take place somewhere between 1917 and 2017.” There’s about a century between the events of Wonder Woman and the present day Batman v Superman and Justice League, so there’s plenty of time periods to explore in future sequels.

Emmerich also weighs in on the potential for an R-rated film in the DC Extended Universe. While Marvel Studios is refraining from adult-oriented films, Fox has embraced the R rating with Deadpool and Logan. Also, Sony’s Venom movie is rumored to be targeting an R rating. Will DC join in? Emmerich sounds optimistic. “I would be surprised if we didn’t at some point make an R-rated DC movie.” If/when DC decides to enter the R rating game, we have some ideas.
