X-MEN Casting Bits: Rosario Dawson Exits NEW MUTANTS, Quicksilver Returns for DARK PHOENIX

We have a couple of casting updates on two of the next movies in the X-Men universe. First off, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Rosario Dawson has dropped out of Josh Boone’s New Mutants. Replacing her is Alice Braga, whose credits include I Am Legend and Predators. It’s unclear why Dawson exited the project.

Braga will play Dr. Cecilia Reyes, who can generate a protective bio-field around herself, but there’s apparently more to her than meets the eye. The movie also stars Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, and Blu Hunt. Production is expected to begin in July.

New Mutants is set to hit theaters on April 13th, 2018.

In other news, the next installment in the main X-Men series, Dark Phoenix, is beginning production this week. THR has also learned that Evan Peters’ Peter Maximoff, aka Quicksilver, is coming back for this movie. Dark Phoenix has also cast The Next Step actor Lamar Johnson in an unknown role.

Peters’ Quicksilver became a fan-favorite after his glorified cameo in Days of Future Past, where his “Time in a Bottle” scene served as arguably the highlight. The character returned last year in Apocalypse, where he had an even bigger scene showing off his speed. He also had a slightly larger supporting role, joining the X-Men and discovering that Magneto is his father. Maybe in Dark Phoenix, he’ll actually get around to telling Magneto about it.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix hits theaters on November 2nd, 2018.
