Alleged X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX Plot Details Hint at Magneto's Role

The next installment of the main X-Men series, Dark Phoenix, will see the returns of many characters from previous films. Among them is Erik Lensherr/Magneto, played by Michael Fassbender. In the last three films, Lensherr started out as an ally to Charles Xavier and his team of mutants, before leaving to pursue his own path for mutant civil rights. From there, he has frequently served as both ally and enemy to the X-Men, resorting to whichever fits his agenda. So, will this continue in Dark Phoenix?

Nerdist has uncovered some potential plot details for Dark Phoenix, and they offer some hints at Magneto’s role in this particular story. Some possible mild spoilers below….

So, in Dark Phoenix, Magneto will reportedly get a redesigned costume. This happens with most comic book movie characters nowadays, so no biggie, right? But according to Nerdist, this new suit will contain imagery that is commonly associated with cult leaders. Thus, it’s possible that Magneto may have a group of followers who see him as some sort of Messianic figure. The Acolytes, perhaps?

Additionally, Nerdist says that Dark Phoenix will feature the cinematic debut of Genosha. In the comics, Genosha is a country that originally had mutant apartheid, until Magneto took control and made it a mutant homeland. Could we see something like this play out in the movie? It’s possible.

If these plot points are true, then it should give Magneto a very interesting new role in the X-Men movies. Throughout the series, he has been working to advance the mutant cause in a way that doesn’t agree with the X-Men. It would make sense that he would eventually be seen as a Messianic figure of some sort, leading to him leading a cult and even a nation. Should be interesting to see play out.
